Dear Catholic School Principals,

The recent earthquake in Haiti has touched our hearts profoundly.  We share in the pain of this terrible tragedy which has affected the people of Haiti.  Certainly at a time like this, we all feel obligation to do something to help.  It occurred to me while thinking about a project through which our Catholic schools could raise funds to assist, that perhaps we could do something Archdiocesan-wide and expand the impact of our assistance. In exploring possibilities, it was realized that our impact would be even more significant if we partner with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles - Holy Childhood Association “Children Helping Children” office.

I would like to invite your school community to participate in “HATS FOR HAITI” prayer and donation for the humanitarian relief needed in Haiti.  We invite your school population to select one day between TUESDAY, JANUARY 19 through FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2010 - to wear hats to school – baseball hats, cowboy hats, crazy hats, etc.,  and each participant is asked to donate $1.00 (although a larger donation is certainly welcome) toward our “Hats for Haiti” cause.  Parents in the various schools may wish to write a check payable to the school or the Holy Childhood Association – Haiti Fund.  Each school will collect the money donated and send the check/s directly to THE HOLY CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATION – HAITI FUND.  Please mail your check to:

Let’s begin today and pray to the Holy Spirit that we will muster up enough love, hope, prayers and money for this effort.  We have an anonymous donor who will match dollar for dollar all funds collected through this effort – up to $100,000.00.  Then, 100 % of all funds will be “wired” directly to the Archdiocese of Port au Prince, Haiti, on January 29th – so please mail your checks before January 29th.  The HCA will track each school’s participation amount and detail it in a cover letter to accompany our donation.  Participants will receive a copy of the letter we send for their records.

It is our hope that together we can raise at least $100,000.00 for Holy Childhood Association to assist in their efforts to aid Haiti.  If we can get 200 schools to participate and each school can raise at least $500.00, we will meet our goal.  I encourage you to share the flyer with your school and parish population as well.  If we can get workplaces involved, our donation could be even greater!

I am looking forward to working together to support the people of Haiti during this tragic time. This is who we are as Catholic schools and it will be wonderful to demonstrate it on a large scale.

Sincerely,

Mrs. April M. Luchonok
